"Asylum"
Short Fiction 1942 23,000 words
Part of the
Dreegh Series
1 —     "Asylum" 1942
2 —     "The Proxy Intelligence" 1968

The two Dreegh stories were adapted into the fix-up novel Supermind (1977), along with the previously unrelated story "Research Alpha."

A third Dreegh story was planned but never written; it was to be entitled "I.Q. 10,000." As a result, van Vogt used "Research Alpha" as the novel's conclusion, a story which was not part of the original Dreegh series.

Some editions of this anthology are in fact heavily abridged, and the contents differ from edition to edition. Some editions were also published under new titles. As such, "Asylum" was not included in the 1952 Grayson & Grayson edition or the 1954 retitled reprint, Selections from Adventures in Space and Time. It was however included in the 1957 edition Famous Science-Fiction Stories: Adventures in Time and Space.
