Destination: Universe!
Collection 1952 77,000 words

Description

An excellent selection of van Vogt's classic stories from the 1940s.

  • Some time in the late '40s, Arkham Press had intended to published a large hardback volume containing his most popular stories. This volume never appeared, and instead the stories were published in two separate volumes by Pellegrini & Cudahy as Away and Beyond and Destination: Universe!

  • Van Vogt's Introduction discusses how science fiction serves to stretch the reader's mind by introducing him to scientific concepts without him even being aware of it. Depending on the edition, this Introduction is either printed at the end as an afterword, or omitted altogether.

This is one of those covers that bears no relation to the contents of the book. However, it is still an excellent work of art. The art-deco style is commendable for a '70s paperback, but the sole reason why this is one of my favorite covers is because of the subtle and easily-missed element of humor it contains: A thriving metropolis is being decimated by an alien attack, flying saucers are overhead, and a group of aliens stand in the foreground firing their death-rays in an orgy of destruction. It is obviously a full-scale invasion by a superior force, and mankind doesn't stand a chance of survival against their relentless onslaught. And, in the very front of the painting is a over-turned parking meter that reads "Time Expired" — a wonderful touch of black humor.
