Empire of the Atom
Novel   (Fix-Up) 1957 60,000 words
  • This novel was slightly abridged when it appeared as an Ace Double in 1957. All other editions contain the full text.

  • Confusingly, some printings of "The Barbarian" are actually an excerpt of Chapters 19-24 of Empire of the Atom, containing material not present in the original story.

Several years ago I got an email out of the blue from Kim McCauley, daughter of the cover artist. His full name was Harold William, not "Howard" as sometimes supposed, and he passed away in 1977. But the most intriguing fact she shared with me is that he was the model for the famous Quaker Oats man:

"He worked with Haddon Sundblom who, as you probably know, was responsible for most of the Coke Santa's. Well, they would pose for themselves and one another to save money on modeling fees. Haddon used himself as the model for the Coke Santa, and he used my father for the model in the Quaker Oats add. [...] Haddon did paint him with blue eyes and in reality he had light hazel eyes, and brown wavey hair. They had a ball getting into costumes and posing."

You can learn more about McCauley and his work here and here.

I used to think this was Wayne D. Barlowe's artwork, but now I'm not so sure. Anybody have any idea who this might be?
