Quest for the Future
Novel   (Fix-Up) 1970 60,000 words

Description

When high school physics teacher Peter Caxton stumbles upon the existence of the mysterious Palace of Immortality, he embarks on a desperate journey to find it again... Even if he has to defy Time itself.

  • This is notable for being van Vogt's only fix-up novel that was created entirely from previously unrelated stories. The storyline of "The Search" is used as the central basis of the novel — one man's quest for the elusive Palace of Immortality — although the original story was extensively altered and expanded for this appearance. The other two stories were also extensively altered and expanded to fit into this single over-arching theme. As with many fix-up novels, a large amount of original material was also written to make the overall story more seamless. With this novel, trying pin down which chapters exactly correlate with which story's segments is a complex task.
