Slan Hunter
written with Kevin J. Anderson
Novel 2006 72,200 words
  • A sequel to Slan (1940), authorized by the van Vogt estate and penned by the very prolific best-selling author Kevin J. Anderson, best known as the author of the Saga of Seven Suns and co-author of the new Dune novels. It is based on the outline for the novel Slan II: The Tendriless War by A.E. van Vogt and his stepson Gregory Brayman (Lydia's son by a previous marriage). Brayman was not credited in Slan Hunter for his contributions to the original outline.

  • Unlike most novels for the past thirty or so years, this novel's first appearance was as a serial, in three installments in the bi-monthly online magazine Jim Baen's Universe. Each installment ran to about 24,000 words.

  • The Tor edition contains an Introduction by Lydia van Vogt, who until now has been reticent to make public statements of any nature. In this Introduction she relates the conception of Slan II and the painful experience of seeing van Vogt slowly succumb to Alzheimers.

First edition

Curiously enough, the Slan & Slan Hunter omnibus predates the hardback edition of Slan Hunter by one month, making the omnibus the first time the novel appeared in book form. However, this — its first solo publication — remains the "official" first edition.

The wallpaper image is a file that was emailed to me by the cover artist himself, Bruce Jensen. I'd like to thank Bruce very much for sharing his art in this "textless" form, which is always a real treat to see.
