The Violent Man
Novel 1962 130,000 words

Description

Shortly after the Korean War, an American is incarcerated in a prisoner-of-war camp in Communist China. He plots his escape by keenly manipulating his captors.

  • The main character of this novel is an embodiment of the "violent male" personality type that van Vogt identified during his years as a Dianetic therapist. (Partly explained in his non-fiction article "The Violent Male.")

  • This is one of van Vogt's very few works that are not science fiction or fantasy.

  • In response to some questions by Colin Wilson regarding the "violent male" personality type, van Vogt wrote a booklet entitled A Report on the Violent Male.

This copy is in bad condition — it looks like somebody gave it a rub-down with a sheet of sandpaper — but it can be clearly seen that it merely reproduces a cut-out portion of Bama's painting for the 1967 edition.

By the way, I'm none too sure if I believe that bit about "OVER 350,000 COPIES IN PRINT." I'll believe it when I see 350,001 copies sitting in front of me, and no sooner.
