The War Against the Rull
Novel   (Fix-Up) 1959 70,000 words
  • This is a fix-up novel incorporating no fewer than six different stories, more stories than any other fix-up van Vogt ever wrote. Interestingly enough, it contains half of one series ("The Gryb," featuring Commander Morton from "Vault of the Beast") as well as stories originally part of two distinct series — the 3 Rull stories "Cooperate or Else,""The Second Solution," and "The Rull", along with the 2 Yevd stories "The Green Forest" and "The Sound." They have all been rewritten to become part of the loosely-connected adventures of Trevor Jamieson, a character featured in the original Rull stories. As is the case with fix-up novels, each story has undergone substantial revision and new linking material has been written to better bridge the stories.

  • The 1999 Tor edition also included the prequel short story "The First Rull" (1978), written many years after the novel.

  • Confusingly, some printings of "The Rull" are actually an excerpt of Chapters 21-25 of The War Against the Rull, containing new material not present in the original story (specifically the Ploian, who was not present in the original story).

According to the ISFDB entry for this edition, the cryptic "Trimson Grondag" written on the side of the spaceship is related to Star Trek in some way. I've scoured the internet to try to find out more, but have turned up nothing. Anybody know anything more about this? Please let me know.

Also, Lledó has provided me with a strange image that seems to be a very close imitation of this cover painting:

Anybody know anything about this either?

Also includes the prequel story "The First Rull" (1978).

The cover art for this edition originally appeared on the front of Astounding for the first installment of The Players of Null-A in October 1948. Also, Tor's 2002 edition of The World of Null-A has the artwork from the second installment of Players in November 1948. Both Tor books, strangely enough, erroneously credit the cover art to "Mark Rogers."

Details sketchy. May be a phantom edition (i.e., only planned but never actually released).

Anybody ever seen a copy of this edition? I could certainly use some confirmation.
