The Wizard of Linn
Novel 1950 59,500 words
  • In the years leading up to 1950 van Vogt had begun contributing to other magazines, and submitting fewer stories to Astounding Science Fiction. This was his last work to appear in Campbell's magazine. He submitted The Battle of Forever to Analog for serialization in 1970, but Campbell was unable to find a slot for it in the magazine's packed schedule. [Mentioned in John W. Campbell Letters, Vol. 2]

  • A brief summary of the events in Empire of the Atom was included in the book edition of Wizard.

  • Since I haven't yet given either a detailed examination, I am currently unsure whether any significant alterations were made to the serial version of Wizard for book publication.

This issue saw publication of Hubbard's first public work about Dianetics. As a result, copies of this issue are very scarce, since it is a collector's item among Scientologists and Dianeticists alike. (And no, that is not Hubbard on the front cover!)

(My main source for information on this edition is the ISFDB. Additional details have been provided by Denis Dubé, who also contributed all of the images seen here.)

Dimensions: 8 3/4" x 5 1/2"

According to information on the book's copyright page, only 100 copies of this edition were printed.

Reportedly, Aeonian Press / Amereon House illegally publishes facsimiles of earlier editions. Here, the 1962 Ace edition has been copied.

Possibly reprinted by the same publisher in December 1976, under their "Aeonian Press" name.
